The Business of Helping Others
"You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want," - Zig Ziglar.
This is powerful advice from one of the most insightful motivational speakers of our time. What makes this so poignant is that it applies beyond your professional and your personal life, helping others also makes the world a better place.
Helping Others Helps Your Business
Applying Zig’s advice to your business is the ultimate example of how to sell without selling. You may have the best product or service in your market, but if your entire lingo is focused around how great you are, then people will get tired of hearing it. Having a business model that is centered on helping others will eliminate a lot of suspicions that accompanies sales, and if a person can tell that you are genuinely trying to help them, then they will trust you and your company instead of thinking, “This salesperson is just trying to squeeze me for every dollar I have.” A sales relationship based purely on money will not inspire loyalty and will also be quickly abandoned if your clients come across a competitor that is more helpful with their needs.
The nature of business means that you have a product or service that people want or need. Helping others through your business does not mean that you have to turn your company into a charity; it just means changing your approach from constantly pushing sales to having an attitude of serving others and going the extra mile. Practically, a business model of serving others will mean long talks with your clients, offering your expertise on how they can improve their business, and even lots of freemiums and giveaways. This approach may not immediately lead to a sale, but it will give your company a golden reputation that will ripple throughout your industry; and if helping other becomes ingrained in your company culture, this will lead to sales compounding like interest.
Helping Others Helps Yourself
Helping others will also bring you the obvious benefit of feeling good about yourself and what you do. By helping others, you will find your life to be more meaningful; this is a satisfaction that you cannot buy with money. When Zig says helping others will bring you, “all you want in life,” one implication from this is that others will help you. Living in a culture that values self-sufficiency, this advice may be hard to swallow, but it is part of the package. If all you do is help others and yet refuse to allow others to help you out of pride, then you will be drained and even grow resentful. Whenever you help someone, they will be grateful and they will want to return the favor, it is okay to let them. Getting “all you want in life,” means you will need to communicate to the world what you want, and if helping others is new to you, then you may be surprised to discover that helping others is addictive and what you really want are more resources and connections so that you can help more people.
Helping Others Betters the World
Imagine if we lived in a world where selfishness and greed were no longer an issue, and everybody went out of their way to help one another. This would be a wonderful world to both live in and do business in. If you believed a company was genuinely trying to help you, then you would no longer look at their sales presentations with suspicion, and every time you have a need you would have masses friends that will be there for you in a heartbeat. This may sound like pie in the sky talk, but if you have experienced firsthand how powerful it can be to help others and to be helped, then you will agree that living in this world is a possibility.
